This exclusive-use castle rental in Tuscany puts the whole of Castello di Vicarello in your hands — twelve suites, three marble pools and forty hectares of vineyard, olive grove and forest, with no other guests on the property. Built by the Republic of Siena some 900 years ago and restored over eighteen years by the Baccheschi Berti family, who still call it home, the castle sits on a private hilltop midway between Rome and Florence. It is a working estate as much as a residence: seven hectares of organic vineyard supply the wine on the table, and a henhouse still supplies the eggs at breakfast.
Six suites occupy the main house and four more form two garden blocks, each with its own private infinity pool; every room is en-suite, and several open onto private terraces, patios or gardens. Interiors mix original stone walls, terracotta floors and vaulted ceilings with furniture, ceramics and artworks the family collected during years spent in Indonesia — a Balinese daybed beside a centuries-old fireplace is typical of the effect. A separate two-bedroom villa, La Vedetta, adds a 210-square-metre house with its own rooftop terrace and pool, useful for a couple or a smaller party wanting distance from the main group.
Grounds run to nearly forty hectares, gated and entirely private, with a hiking trail through olive groves and woodland, an organic vegetable garden, and three pools — two heated — set among landscaped lawns and terraces. A gazebo among the olive trees is kept for massage treatments, and a sauna, steam room and outdoor Jacuzzi sit off the Spa Suite. The romantic gardens and rooftop terraces are built for gathering: a long table for forty under the stars, a wedding party dancing until the small hours without another guest in earshot, or simply a family spread across pools and lawns for a week.
Book the estate and you get butlers, kitchen staff, daily housekeeping, a welcome drink and breakfast as standard, with a private chef, spa treatments, wine tasting, cooking classes and helicopter transfers available on request. The team runs weddings, milestone reunions and retreats routinely, from ceremony to candlelit dinner, and typically asks for a seven-night minimum, Saturday to Saturday.
